
Why? Because her style, both on screen (in the Hitchcock gems Rear Window and To Catch a Thief) and off, was clean, understated, and elegant - a classy department from the typical 50's starlet. She favored shirtwaist dresses, simple evening gowns, tailored tweed suits, low heels, and gloves, and proudly wore horn-rimmed glasses (for nearsightedness) in public.
